Kibale National Park in Uganda is well known for its highest density and diversity of primates in all of Africa. It is the best place in Uganda and perhaps the world for chimpanzee trekking. This park hosts 70 species of mammals, of which 13 are primates.
This park has a sizeable number of more than 1,450 chimpanzees, which is Uganda’s largest population of chimps in one area. The parks receives thousands of tourist each year especially those who would like to trek and discover these fascinating creatures who share 98 percent of our DNA.
Chimpanzee trekking usually takes between 2–4 hours and upon locating them, you’ll get to spend about 1 hour observing these intelligent primates as they forage and swing from one tree to the other playing together. Other species of monkeys in this park includes the rare L’Hoest’s monkey, red colobus monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, bush baby, olive baboons and red-tailed monkeys.
Bigger mammals present here includes elephants, buffalos, leopards, bushbucks, warthogs, duikers and lions though rare to see.
Best time to visit:
The park is open throughout the year but the month of January, February, June, July, August and end of December are the driest months which translates to the best time for walking the trails, seeing the chimpanzees and other related activities.
