Masai Mara National Reserve is located south-west of Nairobi and is one of the most famous wildlife safari destination in Kenya. This wildlife reserve covers an area of 1500 square kilometers, sharing the border with Serengeti National Park to the south along the Tanzania border. Masai Mara is the best place to witness the earth’s greatest spectale where over 2 million wildebeest, zebras and other herbivores make their way from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya in search of lush and fresh pastures. This wildlife migration is determined and controlled by the rainfall patterns.
The wildebeest migration usually takes place between the month of July and September each year and the most dramatic scenes happens at the Mara River crossings where the wildebeest and zebras jump into the crocodile infested river as they cross to the other side in search of new pastures.
The park is accessible throughout the year but the best time to visit is between the month of July and February when the park is dry and easy to observe wildlife. During the month of March, April and May, the park experiences heavy rainfall which results to more dense vegetation making it difficult to spot more wildlife.
Other resident wildlife of Masai Mara include lions, cheetahs, leopard, zebras , hippos, crocodiles, ostriches , gazelles, impalas, elephants, hyenas, topi, jackals and many more.
